Van der Walt to return home for wedding

Head Coach Richard Cockerill has confirmed that Jaco van der Walt will miss next Monday’s home fixture against Cardiff Blues as the stand-off will this week return home to South Africa to get married.

Van der Walt – who grabbed a pair of penalties in Sunday’s Guinness PRO14 win over Scarlets – will also quarantine on his return to Scotland following the wedding which takes place this Friday.

“He’s flying to South Africa today [Monday] to get married on Friday. He will miss Cardiff and then at this point he will have to quarantine,” said Cockerill.

“Nathan Chamberlain will step up and we will be short in that 10 position, but that’s the challenge. For me we have to use this time to keep blooding young players, keep blooding new players and there’s going to be opportunities for guys across the board.”

Van der Walt has been a standout performer for the capital side since his arrival in 2017, while he is set to qualify for Scotland through residency later this month.

“I get married on Friday, fly back on Sunday, then it sounds like I’m going to have to be in quarantine,” said Van der Walt.

“Thankfully Coach Cockers has been very understanding. It’s a big step in me and my fiancée’s life, we want to get it done and move on.”
