Six players join Edinburgh Rugby academy
Edinburgh Rugby today welcomed six new players to the club’s academy set-up.
Heriot’s Rugby quartet Ben Evans (back-three), Jamie Campbell (second-row), Matt Russell (stand-off) and Michael Jones (loosehead prop), plus Southern Knights Harri Morris and Watsonians Rugby Rudi Brown (both back-row) all linked up with the squad to start to pre-season training this week.
They take the place of Nathan Chamberlain (stand-off) and Ben Muncaster (back-row), who have both progressed to the senior squad, plus academy leavers Shaun Gunn, Charlie Jupp, Scott King and Jack Mann.
All contracted academy players train daily with the senior squad and coaches to accelerate their development and creates a regular and closer association for talented emerging players.
The players will continue to receive academy support through age-grade specialist coaches, S&C and physios, while all players also have been allocated a FOSROC Super6 team, through which they can earn further training and playing opportunities.
Scottish Rugby’s Director of Performance, Jim Mallinder, said: “Last year was the first time that the contracted academy players were aligned with the professional teams.
“Even with the challenges that Covid-19 has provided, a number of young players were able to gain valuable experience in the pro team environment.”
