Scotland star Watson to host junior coaching session with Scottish Building Society
Edinburgh Rugby star, Scotland internationalist and British & Irish Lion Hamish Watson will host three junior teams at BT Murrayfield for a bespoke training session next month, in partnership with Main Club Partner, Scottish Building Society.
Junior sides from Ellon RFC, Marr Rugby Club (girls section) and Wolves Rugby have all been invited to Scotland’s national stadium for special one-off session after submitting winning entries to a competition on social media, launched by Scottish Building Society at the end of last year.
Having been asked to submit ‘how they’ve stuck together this season’ and ‘their ambitions for the new year’, all three clubs showcased a togetherness and spirt that made them clear winners of the Scottish Building Society-led competition.
Watson said: “I’m really excited to host all three teams at BT Murrayfield for what will be a really fun and interactive session with the Edinburgh Rugby squad.
“I really enjoyed getting tips and picking up skills from pro players when I was young kid, so it’ll be great to replicate that at next month’s session and hopefully the boys and girls take away plenty of learnings from the training and Q&A.
“It’s been awesome to work with Scottish Building Society in planning this session. We can’t wait to welcome the junior teams to BT Murrayfield.”
Paul Denton, Chief Executive Officer for Scottish Building Society, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Edinburgh Rugby and Hamish Watson to facilitate the training session. It’s very rewarding for us at Scottish Building Society to support local teams who are the future of Scottish rugby and local communities, which aligns with our core ethos of being a people-first organisation.
“The interest in the competition from all four corners of Scotland and beyond was outstanding, and we recognise the force for good these teams create in local communities. We’re looking forward to introducing similar competitions and training sessions in partnership with Edinburgh Rugby over the coming months, and we would like to thank their team and Hamish Watson for their valued support.”
The three teams will be put through their paces at BT Murrayfield by Watson and members of the Edinburgh Rugby squad – with assistance from the club’s community coaches – before the junior players get the opportunity to put their questions to the Edinburgh stars during an exclusive Q&A session.
Marr Rugby Girls Coach, Stuart Lambert, said: “The Marr Rugby Girls squad are really excited to spend some time with Hamish, one of the best players in the world.
“The girls are keen to learn as much as they can which will help them become better rugby players and hopefully be as good as Hamish, even playing for Scotland in the future! Most importantly, they are looking forward to having fun at the session.”
Brodie McAlister, captain of the Ellon RFC junior side, said: “I’m excited that we’ve won this opportunity and I’m really looking forward to meeting Hamish and doing the training session, especially because it’s at BT Murrayfield.
“We all really enjoy watching Hamish play for Scotland and this is a brilliant chance to meet him and learn some skills from him. We’d really like some tips on improving our tackling especially because Hamish hasn’t missed a tackle in the Six Nations since 2019!”
Ellon Rugby U14's Coach Grant Donald added: “We’re very excited at the prospect of having a training session with Hamish Watson and they can't wait for the opportunity to learn from one of their heroes.
“Hamish has consistently been one of the Six Nation’s top performers for a number of years and we are hoping that the boys make the most of this amazing experience and then demonstrate what they have learned in our next game.”
