Quick Hits: Vellacott finding his feet
Get the Quick Hits from Ben Vellacott as the scrum-half spoke with media following Saturday's Scottish Building Society Pre-Season Series match against Newcastle Falcons at the ERS
On the new stadium and pitch
“A few of the lads were speaking in the changing room about different it is compared to training. It’s been a long time since we’ve actually played a game so it’s really nice to blow away the cobwebs and play a bit of rugby.”
On the defeat to Falcons
“I think Newcastle are at a different stage compared to us. They go into the start of their league next week and we’ve still got a couple of weeks’ training and one more pre-season game.
"If you look at a couple of highlights in the first and second half we put in some really good performances. There were some good performances across the show from a few individuals.”
On settling in at the club
“It’s been absolutely incredible and I can’t speak highly enough of the club. The boys have been really welcoming and it’s really nice to link up with boys I played my younger age grade stuff with. To be able to have run out on the pitch for the first was amazing.”
On international ambitions
“I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t in the back of my mind but at the end of the day we’ve got a new coach, a new playing style, I’m at a new club and you’ve got to put in the performances on the pitch to back that up.
"So that comes first and until I put in good performances on the pitch international [rugby] doesn’t really come into my thinking.”
On having a former scrum-half as Head Coach
“It always helps. Mike’s obviously a very experienced player, playing for Edinburgh for many years and internationally and then going on to play for the Lions.
"It’s always very helpful if that can help me improve my game and the other nines we’ve got here can learn off him and improve our own individual games.”
