In Numbers: Jaco makes his case

In Numbers: Jaco makes his case

With the news that Jaco van der Walt has committed his future to the club, we've taken the time to analyse the numbers and figure out where the stand-off sits in comparison the club's pro-era 10's.

From Duncan Hodge to Duncan Weir, we've seen plenty of international stars don the the famous No. 10 jersey, however, now in his fourth season at BT Murrayfield, Jaco is quickly making his case as one of the club's most successful stand-offs in the professional era.

The stats below ONLY include performances as a starting stand-off. All points and games in other positions or as replacements are NOT included.

Starts

1.) Phil Godman - 118

2.) Duncan Hodge - 91

3.) Jaco van der Walt - 55

4.) David Blair - 31

5.) Brendan Laney - 28

Jaco has already made it to third place in the club's all-time list of starts at stand-off. He still has a long way to go to catch-up current Attack Coach Duncan Hodge in second place, but he's made an impressive start to life in the Scottish capital

Successful penalties

1.) Duncan Hodge - 158

2.) Phil Godman - 74

3.) Jaco van der Walt - 66

4.) Greig Laidlaw - 50

5.) Gordon Ross - 49

Jaco again comes in third place when comparing Edinburgh Rugby stand-off's successful penalties. The Scotland cap should overtake Phil Godman and take second place this season, but is still a long way off Duncan Hodge in first place.

Successful conversions

1.) Duncan Hodge - 121

2.) Jaco van der Walt - 77

3.) Phil Godman - 54

4.) Greig Laidlaw - 42

5.) Jason Tovey - 41

It is perhaps down to the attacking style developed by the club in the last number of seasons that sees Jaco van der Walt already sit so high on the club's all-time successful conversions list. Jaco picked up the Guinness PRO14 Golden Boot Award in 2018-19, highlighting his accuracy from the tee.

Points

1.) Duncan Hodge - 793

2.) Phil Godman - 397

3.) Jaco van der Walt - 362

4.) Greig Laidlaw - 253

5.) Gordon Ross - 226

Jaco is once again hot on the heels of Phil Godman in overall points scored from stand-off. Godman did however cross the whitewash on eight occasions, in comparison to just two tries scored by Van der Walt so far.

Overall points scored (including other positions and replacement appearances)

1.) Chris Paterson - 1230

2.) Duncan Hodge - 841

3.) Greig Laidlaw - 606

4.) Brendan Laney - 560

5.) Phil Godman - 435

6.) Jaco van der Walt - 378

On current form, Jaco isn't far off cracking the top-five of the club's all-time points scored - a remarkable achievement given the stand-off is just entering his fourth year in Edinburgh.
