Nine named in Calcutta Cup side

Scotland Head Coach Gregor Townsend has named nine Edinburgh Rugby players in his 23-man squad for Scotland's Guinness Six Nations opener against England (Saturday 5 February, 4.45pm kick-off) at BT Murrayfield.

Scotland will be looking to retain the Calcutta Cup when they play host to England on Saturday, and Townsend has selected nine Edinburgh players for the clash, with Jamie Ritchie named as Scotland vice-captain.

Darcy Graham earns a starting berth on the right wing, rewarding his sparkling club form.

Club co-captain Grant Gilchrist starts at lock, with flanker duo of Ritchie and Hamish Watson lining up at six and seven respectively.

Townsend has picked a full Edinburgh replacement front-row; Pierre Schoeman and WP Nel selected at prop, with Stuart McInally set to come off the bench at hooker.

Magnus Bradbury is in line to make his first cap since 2020, while Blair Kinghorn could add to his 28 Scotland appearances from the bench. Incoming summer signing Sam Skinner is contention to make an appearance, the versatile forward also named amongst the replacements.

Scotland Head Coach Gregor Townsend said: “We feel privileged to be involved in the oldest international rugby fixture on Saturday, against our nearest rivals.

“We are aware of how much winning at Twickenham boosted the spirits of our supporters at the start of last year’s tournament, and we’re looking forward to playing in front of them in person this year.

“We are under no illusions on the tough challenge we have ahead of us against an England side who defeated the World Champions in their last outing.

“The starting 15 we have named has a consistent feel to it which is great for cohesion but we will also benefit from returning players such as Jonny Gray and Rory Sutherland who have been important players for us in recent seasons.

“Ben White has been in very good form for London Irish and has trained well in the last two weeks, so can approach his first involvement at Test level with real confidence.”
