McInally and Gilchrist named club captains for homecoming year
Head Coach Mike Blair has today named Edinburgh Rugby centurions Stuart McInally and Grant Gilchrist as club captains for the 2021/22 season, the first to be played in the capital team’s new home, Edinburgh Rugby Stadium.
The duo – who’ve together made over 300 appearances for the capital club – will lead the team into its ‘homecoming’ year together, having done a similar shared role in 2016 and 2020.
The duo are two of Edinburgh Rugby’s longest tenured stars, with both internationalists entering their 12th season at the club, while the forward pairing came through the ranks of the team’s academy system to represent their boyhood team.
The news comes as Edinburgh Rugby prepare to host the first-ever game at Edinburgh Rugby Stadium (ERS), with Newcastle Falcons the visitors to the team’s new stadium this Saturday (11 September, kick-off 3pm) in the Scottish Building Society Pre-Season Series.
McInally, said: “I’m extremely chuffed to be named club captain alongside Grant once again.
“It’s a role that I’m comfortable and familiar with having done it for a number of season now. I’m really excited and pleased that Mike [Blair] has chosen us.
“I take a lot of pride in leading Edinburgh Rugby. I’ve played almost all of my professional career here and I have a strong emotional attachment to the club." Stuart McInally
“I know Grant and I will work well together as we’ve done before. It’s not a responsibility we take lightly and we’ll do everything we can to ensure the club is successful as possible both on and off the pitch.”
Gilchrist, said: “I’m delighted to be named as captain alongside Stuart for such an exciting and landmark year for the club as we move into our new stadium.”
“This club has played a huge part in my life, having supported Edinburgh Rugby as a boy and now going into my 11th season with a family of my own means so much to me personally. I’m really proud to be leading this team alongside Stuart.”
Head Coach Mike Blair, added: “Stuart and Grant are both natural leaders with different strengths that they will bring with them to the role. We’re delighted to name them club captains for the 2021/22 season.
“Both players know what it means to represent Edinburgh Rugby having come through our academy system to make over 300 combined appearances, while their experience at both club and international level will be pivotal in helping drive the team forward this coming season." Head Coach Mike Blair
“It’s a significant year for the club as we move into our new home and welcome back fans after a really challenging pandemic period.
“As the excitement and anticipation continues to build for the new campaign, today’s appointment is another added boost for both the club and our supporters.”
