Edinburgh to host Falcons and Benetton in 2021-22 curtain-raisers

Edinburgh Rugby will host Newcastle Falcons and Benetton in two pre-season friendlies this September, the first fixtures to be played at the club’s new purpose-built home.

The capital club will take on English Premiership side Falcons at Edinburgh Rugby Stadium (ERS) on the weekend of 10 September before hosting Rainbow Cup winners Benetton the following weekend (w/o 17 September).

Exact dates and kick-off times for both fixtures will be announced in due course, with the warm-up games acting as a curtain raiser to the launch of the United Rugby Championship later that month.

Both matches are included in the 2021/22 Season Ticket Membership, while further ticketing information will be communicated to supporters later this summer.

As supporters return to stands in 2021/22, the back-to-back matches – the first to be hosted in the club’s new home – kickstart a homecoming year for all connected to Edinburgh Rugby.

With supporters snapping up Season Ticket Memberships in unprecedented numbers - having this week surpassed the 3000-mark – the warm-up fixtures give those fans the opportunity to watch Edinburgh Rugby in-person for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director, Douglas Struth, said: “Announcing these warm-up fixtures is a significant milestone for the club and adds further excitement to what is set to be a really special inaugural season in our new home.

“All of us - players, staff and management - cannot wait to see our supporters back in stands next season, and that first match against Newcastle Falcons will be a celebratory, and in many ways, emotional moment as we acknowledge just how far we’ve come as a club through this pandemic.

“As I’ve always said, Edinburgh Rugby is nothing without its fans, so to see an unprecedented number of supporters secure their Season Ticket Memberships just adds to the build-up and anticipation to the 2021/22 kick-off.”

The two matches are against familiar opponents and will see Edinburgh Rugby host both teams on Scottish soil for the first time since 2018/19.

Edinburgh beat Benetton 31-30 in the Guinness PRO14 in September 2018, while Newcastle Falcons were the visitors to BT Murrayfield in December 2018, where the capital side ran out 31-13 winners in the Heineken Champions Cup group stages.

Reacting to the capital side’s warm-up fixtures, Head Coach Richard Cockerill, said: “These friendlies are excellent preparation for our upcoming campaign, and as a squad, we’re really excited to run out in our new home for the first time. It'll be a big moment for everyone connected with the club.

“Benetton are a team we know well through the PRO14 and they’ll be playing with confidence off the back of their Rainbow Cup triumph.

“Newcastle Falcons are a quality opponent who have recruited well so far this summer, while any team coached by Dean Richards will be tough to play against.

“It's good to have both fixtures in our sights as we prepare to begin pre-season preparations in a fortnight's time. We can’t wait to play in front of our home support again."

Securing your Season Ticket Membership remains the best way to watch Edinburgh Rugby in 2021/22.

The new stadium footprint features categories around the ground to suit every budget, in fully reserved seating or standing terraces, all closer to the action than ever before.

All categories give fans access to all regular season home games (nine league matches and two European Challenge Cup pool rounds) and access to the two pre-season friendlies against Newcastle Falcons and Benetton.
