Edinburgh to face Sale Sharks and La Rochelle in 2020-21 Champions Cup
The draw for the new-look 2020-21 Heineken Champions Cup took place earlier today with Edinburgh drawn in Pool A against English Premiership side Sale Sharks and French Top 14 Club Stade La Rochelle.
The previously announced new tournament format sees 24 clubs made up of eight representatives from each of the Gallagher Premiership, the Guinness PRO14 and the TOP 14 drawn into two pools of 12 – Pool A and Pool B.
With Edinburgh earmarked as a Tier 2 club prior to the draw, the capital side had the possibility of facing Sale Sharks/ Harlequins or La Rochelle/ Clermont, and as such have been drawn into Pool A with Sale Sharks and La Rochelle.
Coming up against Sale Sharks, it will be the first time Edinburgh have faced the reigning Premiership Cup champions since hosting the English club in a pre-season friendly at Meggetland in 2017. The fixture could also see winger Duhan van der Merwe come up against his brother - hooker Akker van der Merwe.
The season's European clash with La Rochelle will also see a rematch of the 2017 European Challenge Cup Quarter-Final in which current Scotland star Hamish Watson was named Man of the Match in the home defeat.
