Edinburgh side named for European group stage decider
The Edinburgh Rugby team to face Pau in tomorrow night’s EPCR Challenge Cup Group C decider at DAM Health Stadium was today named by Head Coach Mike Blair (Friday 8 April, kick-off 8pm) – streamed live at epcrugby.tv.
The capital club make nine changes to the XV that faced the Emirates Lions in Johannesburg last Saturday as they aim to secure the top spot in the group and thus a home Round of 16 tie the following weekend.
In the backs, young Edinburgh Rugby academy graduates Cammy Hutchison (23) and Matt Currie (21) get an opportunity to link up in the capital midfield, while Argentine flyer Ramiro Moyano replaces compatriot Emiliano Boffelli on the wing.
Scotland internationalists Jaco van der Walt (stand-off) and Henry Pyrgos (scrum-half) combine to form a refreshed and experienced half-back pairing.
Four further changes are made to the pack as Luan du Bruin (tighthead) starts up front and Marshall Sykes returns to the second-row, while Glen Young and Connor Boyle – both replacements in last weekend’s clash with Emirates Lions – start at blindside and openside flanker respectively.
Ahead of the European match-up, Blair, said: “Pau will be a huge test for us but it’s a challenge I know our guys are up for. They can’t wait to get back out there under the Friday night lights after a really positive two-week tour in South Africa.
“We make a number of changes to the starting line-up – partly to keep things fresh after a long flight home – but also because guys deserve their opportunity after training incredibly hard and impressing over the last few weeks.
“We love playing at DAM Health Stadium and it’s going to be brilliant to be back in front of our supporters once again. They bring an added energy on match night which has so often made the difference this season.”
The inclusion of Moyano on the wing is the only alteration to an otherwise unchanged back-three as full-back Henry Immelman and winger Darcy Graham continue in the backfield.
Scotland international hooker Stuart McInally packs down alongside props Pierre Schoeman and De Bruin up front as locks Grant Gilchrist – once again named captain – and Sykes form the remainder of the tight-five.
Club centurion Magnus Bradbury (number 8) anchors a back-row which includes flankers Young and Boyle.
