Edinburgh side named for Connacht clash
The Edinburgh Rugby team to face to Connacht in tomorrow night’s United Rugby Championship clash at DAM Health Stadium has been named by Head Coach Mike Blair (Friday 4 March, kick-off 7.35pm) – live on Premier Sports
The starting XV includes six changes to the team that faced Munster a fortnight ago as Chris Dean (centre) and Henry Pyrgos (scrum-half) both get the nod for the crunch URC clash.
The remaining alterations are made to the pack as hooker Dave Cherry – making his 50th appearance for the club – and tighthead prop Angus Williams are selected up front, while lock Pierce Phillips and Fijian international number 8 Mesulame Kunavula are both named starters after featuring from the bench at Thomond Park.
Ahead of the match-up, Blair said: “We’ve had three difficult away games on the bounce, so we can’t wait to be back playing in front of our own fans at DAM Health Stadium.
“It’s a Friday night, a good crowd is expected and I know our guys will be fired up to pull on the jersey and represent this club and city.
“During this period, we’ve seen a lot of young players step up and we’ll need the same again on Friday night. We want the crowd to get right behind us and we want them to appreciate some of the young talented players coming through, who give their all to the jersey every time they step on the pitch.”
An unchanged back-three sees Henry Immelman continue at full-back alongside Argentine international wingers Emiliano Boffelli and Ramiro Moyano.
Dean – making his first home start of the season – is paired with Scotland international James Lang in midfield, while scrum-half Pyrgos – named captain – links up with stand-off Blair Kinghorn at half-back.
Hooker Cherry packs down alongside props Boan Venter and Williams up front, as locks Phillips and Glen Young – twice a try-scorer on his last outing at DAM Health Stadium – complete the tight-five.
No. 8 Kunavula anchors a back-row featuring young flankers Connor Boyle and Ben Muncaster , with the former putting pen-to-paper on a new deal earlier this week.
Elsewhere, Edinburgh Rugby Academy forwards Jamie Campbell (lock) and Rudi Brown (back-row) are named among the replacements and will make their professional debuts if called upon.
