Edinburgh Rugby to welcome Afghan refugees to 1872 Cup decider
Edinburgh Rugby will welcome a group of Afghan refugees to this Saturday’s 1872 Cup derby against Glasgow Warriors at BT Murrayfield (21 May, kick-off 6.30pm) as part of a working initiative with City of Edinburgh Council’s Resettlement Team.
The group of over 20 – made up of families who’ve arrived to settle in the Scottish capital – will attend their first-ever intercity derby this Saturday, which sees Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors face off in the URC regular season finale.
The derby fixture at Scotland’s national stadium regularly attracts a bumper crowd, with this season’s decider set to settle the winner of both the 1872 Cup and Scottish x Italian Shield, and thus Heineken Champions Cup qualification.
Edinburgh Rugby Community Manager, Ruaridh Pye, said: “We can’t wait to welcome this group to Saturday’s 1872 Cup derby at BT Murrayfield.
“It’s lovely to be able to offer this opportunity to a really deserving number of families who have come to Scotland to re-settle and start a new life.
“Rugby is a great vehicle for showcasing the core values of sport, and as such, we really hope they enjoy the experience and spectacle at Scotland’s national stadium.
“We look forward to hosting the families and hope they come back to an Edinburgh Rugby game in the near future.”
