Edinburgh Rugby join Doddie Aid 2022
Edinburgh Rugby will once again join the Doddie Aid Inter-District Challenge, with the capital side donating and contributing towards the Team Edinburgh total for 2022.
Kicking off next month, Doddie Aid is a mass participation event which encourages those signing up for one of the five ‘districts’ to get active in January, while raising funds for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to help find a cure to Motor Neuron Disease.
The Edinburgh Rugby squad have once again got behind the fund-raising initiative and their participation in next month’s Inter-District Challenge will see the combined miles ran by each signed-up player throughout January – logged using GPS data – added to the Team Edinburgh total.
With a number of the team’s stars already signed up – including Hamish Watson and Grant Gilchrist – Edinburgh Rugby’s involvement will see the club donate a total raised by its playing group, staff and management at the end of the month.
Supporters can also join an ‘Edinburgh Rugby league’ which will allow them to compare their total miles to some of the club’s signed-up players and staff.
Edinburgh Rugby club captain Grant Gilchrist said: “Doddie Aid is a great initiative and it was a roaring success last year. It’s brilliant to see it up and running again in 2022 and we’re delighted to be involved as a club this coming January.
“All of us need to get back on the horse after a big Christmas and New Year, and Doddie Aid is a brilliant way to challenge yourself and the other districts taking part, by clocking up as many miles as possible." Grant Gilchrist
“Not only will Doddie Aid encourage you to get out and get active in January, but it’s also all about showing support to Doddie and helping him in his fight to find a cure for MND.
“I’d encourage all of our supporters to get signed up for Doddie Aid, support the big man, log your miles and let’s get Team Edinburgh the win!”
Doddie Aid Team Edinburgh captain Davy Zyw said: "On behalf of Team Edinburgh and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation I’m delighted to have the support of Edinburgh Rugby for the second instalment of Doddie Aid.
"We collectively raised over a million pounds in 2021, and hope to raise even more in 2022. Motor Neurone Disease tragically effects 1 in 300, and there is no cure. Every person who signs up, every activity logged and every pound raised will help us find new treatments and ultimately a cure.
"We beat Team Glasgow last year, and hope to retain this position on the Doddie Aid scoreboard in 2022.
"Hamish Watson had a key contribution last year, while this year it’s great to have the other Edinburgh Rugby lads and staff involved too. I hope this sets a precedent for other clubs and schools to sign up and see if they can rack up as many miles as Edinburgh Rugby." Team Edinburgh captain Davy Zyw
Doddie Aid splits participants into five districts, with the winning district being the one which covers the furthest distance over the duration of the event. Last year, Doddie Aid covered enough miles to circumnavigate the world 87 times.
To take part and claim your free team snood, simply download the Doddie Aid app and sign up to a district by making a donation. Miles can be logged via the app - gallop, run, cycle, swim, dance, hop, skip, row, roll – any form of exercise counts.
