Dean voted May’s Scottish Building Society Player of the Month

Centre Chris Dean was today voted Scottish Building Society Player of the Month for May.

The club centurion was at the peak of his powers and played a pivotal role against Wasps, Glasgow Warriors and DHL Stormers.

The centre displayed all his attacking prowess throughout the period, capping off an impressive month by putting pen-to-paper on a new deal with his hometown club.

Dean marked his return to the starting line-up in impressive fashion and was at the heart of much of the capital side’s attacking work.

Against Wasps, he kick-started a flowing move that led to Ben Vellacott’s ‘Try of the Season’, before getting his arms free to offload and release Magnus Bradbury for his score against the English Premiership side.

The Dean/Bradbury axis was again in action in the 1872 Cup clash at BT Murrayfield, with a no-look pass from the centre putting Bradbury under the posts for consecutive games.

Sponsored and backed by Scottish Building Society, Edinburgh Rugby’s Main Club Partner will donate £500 to Dean’s charity of choice, the Simpsons Special Care Babies Charity.

Dean has chosen to support the fundraising efforts of the club’s physiotherapist Jamie Coffey, who next month takes part in a 450-mile relay from Gretna Green to John O’Groats in aid of the Edinburgh-based charity.

Dean said: “I’m absolutely delighted to pick up the award for May – a massive thank you to everyone that voted.

“It was an enjoyable month with there being such big games, the highlight being the 1872 Cup win at BT Murrayfield, which was a great day.

“The generous donation from Scottish Building Society is going towards the ‘Stride for Simpsons’ challenge being taken on by a member of our physio team and his family.

“Its aim is to raise funds for the special care unit at the Edinburgh Royal Neonatal Unit where the family received immense care for their premature baby boys. It holds a special place in their heart and any further donations to the challenge would be most welcome.

Paul Denton, Chief Executive of Scottish Building Society, added: “As the season concludes for another year, it is great to award May’s accolade to Chris Dean.

“A stalwart of Edinburgh Rugby, Chris saved his best performances for the biggest games of the season and is a credit to the club.

“The whole club has rallied around physio Jamie Coffey and his fundraising efforts to help parents of premature children.

“This summer he and his family are involved in various funding raising events to support Simpsons Special Care Babies Charity who are based at the Edinburgh Royal Neonatal unit, caring for premature and sick babies – so we are of course more than happy to contribute.

“In total, we have donated £4,500 in supporting good causes through our Player of the Month partnership, which has seen charities across the country receive funding.

“All of these causes have been personal and local to each player, which has meant we have supported organisations of all shapes and sizes in delivering their incredible work.”

Head Coach Mike Blair added: “We’re delighted to see Chris pick up the final Scottish Building Society Player of the Month award of the season. It’s thoroughly deserved after a really strong run of games in the number 12 jersey throughout May.

“Edinburgh Rugby means a lot to Chris and that was really evident in the way he battled to earn his sport in the starting XV. He took his opportunity brilliantly and played a key role in setting up some decisive tries for the team.

“As the season wraps up, I want to thank Scottish Building Society for all their support this year. I’ve loved the way they’ve really got behind the Player of the Month initiative and their generous donations have meant a lot to our squad and their respective charities of choice.”
