Carmichael returns from injury for Ospreys Test
Scotland internationalist Lewis Carmichael will make his long-awaited return from injury as Edinburgh face Ospreys at BT Murrayfield in the Principal & Prosper Pre-Season friendly this Saturday (14 September, kick-off 3pm).
The lock returns to competitive action for the first time in over a year and is named in the starting XV alongside winger Duhan van der Merwe – who also makes his first appearance of the season – and recent summer signing, Ruan Steenkamp.
Elsewhere, new recruit and Scotland international prop Jamie Bhatti is selected among the replacements as Head Coach Richard Cockerill names a 34-man squad for the fixture.
Tickets for Edinburgh’s final Principal & Prosper Pre-Season friendly of 2019 are available here as well as from the ticket office on the day.
Ahead of the match, Cockerill, said: “It’s great to see guys now returning from injury and this weekend will be a good opportunity for them to build-up that match fitness ahead of the new season.
“While we did a lot of positive things in the win over London Scottish, there was also plenty to work on from both an attacking and defensive perspective – so we’re keen to see improvements in all areas of our game.
“Ospreys are obviously a quality side, who we know well from league action, so it will be a great test to see where we are as a squad with the season opener just two weeks away.”
The inclusion of Van der Merwe on the wing is the only alteration to an otherwise unchanged back-three as Jamie Farndale is selected on the opposite flank, while Damien Hoyland - who was named Principal & Prosper Man of the Match in the win over London Scottish a fortnight ago - continues at fullback.
An all-international centre combination sees Matt Scott and Mark Bennett paired in midfield, while scrum-half Nic Groom – who is named as captain – links-up with compatriot Jaco van der Walt at half-back.
David Cherry starts at hooker and packs down alongside Pierre Schoeman and Italian international prop Pietro Ceccarelli in the front row. Carmichael – who makes his first appearance for the club in over a year – is named alongside Murray Douglas in the second-row.
Recent signing Steenkamp gets the nod at openside flanker, with blindside flanker Luke Crosbie and No.8 Nick Haining forming the remainder of the back-row.
