BT Murrayfield West Stand opens for 1872 Cup clash

The West Stand of BT Murrayfield Stadium opened for Platinum ticket sales today as East Stand seats in the same category approach capacity for the fastest-ever selling 1872 Cup decider.

Edinburgh Rugby host Glasgow Warriors in the decisive second leg of the derby match on Sunday 2 January (kick-off 2pm) with the rate of ticket sales to this point outstripping all previous editions.

Just 150 of 5200 central Platinum category seats are available in the East Stand, prompting the move to open the West Stand on the opposite touchline.

The current record crowd of 27,000 turned out for the match in 2019, with this season’s decider on track to surpass that record-breaking day.

There is still good availability in the Gold and Silver category sections of the East Stand, the latter including the ‘Kids-For-A-Quid’ ticket offer, with the opening of corresponding sections elsewhere in the national stadium considered as these sections approach capacity.

Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director, Douglas Struth, said: “We’re delighted supporters are coming out in force and securing their seats for the big 1872 Cup derby decider in the New Year.

“It’s a huge fixture for both clubs and Scottish rugby as a whole. Every season the interest and passion for this fixture grows, with the action and atmosphere of intentional quality and intensity.

“To reach and surpass our record crowd would be really special and fitting of such a great occasion.

He added: “The 1872 Cup is a historic celebration of rugby in the Scotland.

“It’s the world’s oldest derby, which is something we’re really proud of. Hopefully, we can continue to build on the great support we've had over the years and bring in the New Year together in style.”
