Boffelli and McBurney to debut against Dragons

Argentine international full-back Emiliano Boffelli and hooker Adam McBurney are both handed their debuts as Edinburgh Rugby travel to face Dragons at Rodney Parade in Round 6 of the United Rugby Championship this Saturday (27 November, kick-off 5.15pm) – live on Premier Sports.

Boffelli – who officially linked up with the club earlier this week – is inserted straight into the starting line-up having featured in all three of Argentina’s Autumn Internationals, while McBurney makes his first appearance in Edinburgh colours having joined the club from Ulster this past summer.

Head Coach Mike Blair makes a number of changes to the side that secured a bonus-point win against Zebre Parma in last month’s Round 5 clash as Edinburgh search for a third consecutive URC victory.

Scotland internationals WP Nel, Nick Haining, Magnus Bradbury and James Lang all return to the starting line-up, while Boan Venter, Ben Vellacott and Ramiro Moyano also start the Round 6 match-up in Newport.

New Scotland caps Jamie Hodgson, Marshall Sykes and Luke Crosbie – all of whom made their international debuts against Tonga at BT Murrayfield – are selected in the starting capital pack, while FOSROC Scottish Rugby Academy centre Matt Curie gets the nod in midfield.

Scrum-half Vellacott skippers the capital side, with Blair Kinghorn and Crosbie named as vice-captains.

Ahead of the fixture, Blair, said: “I spoke to the players this week to reiterate how important this block of games is. We’ve got Dragons first up which is always a challenging fixture at Rodney Parade.

“I’m expecting a really good performance. The guys that have been here for the last four-week block have worked really hard on their skills and what’s important to our overall game. While the guys that have come back from international camps have brought energy and their own learnings – so they should gel really well.”

Full-back Boffelli is joined in the back-three by Damien Hoyland and fellow Argentine international Moyano.

Lang and Currie link up in midfield, as scrum-half Vellacott – who has four tries in five matches – and stand-off Kinghorn form an exciting half-back pairing.

A new-look front-row sees debutant McBurney pack down alongside Venter and Nel, while new Scotland caps Hodgson and Sykes are named in the second-row to complete a revamped tight-five.

Blindside flanker Haining makes his first Edinburgh appearance of the season after starting for Scotland against World Champions South Africa earlier this month, as openside Crosbie and number 8 Bradbury form the remainder of the pack.

Elsewhere, FOSROC Super6 product and Watsonians loosehead prop Harrison Courtney is named among the replacements and is in line to make his professional debut.
