Blair: "We need to back ourselves."
Get reaction from Head Coach Mike Blair as Edinburgh Rugby fell short away to Munster on Friday evening.
On falling behind and fighting back
“I’m really frustrated with the first 20 minutes, because we’re playing Munster at Thomond Park and I thought we were too passive. We let them do what they wanted to do and gave them a little bit of a foothold in the game.
“I’m really proud of the way the guys fought back, because 13 points is a difficult deficit. We got back to 13-10, played some good rugby and started to back what we know we can do well with ball in hand.
"But then just a little bit of sloppiness gave them a penalty just before half-time and it’s a different story going in at 20-10 than it is going in at 13-10.
“So some frustrations in there - we’ve made things a little bit easy for them at times. I think on the positive side we did create lots of opportunities, but they were promptly followed by little bits of sloppiness as well.”
On taking positives out of two defeats in Ireland
“There’s definitive positives there - it’s difficult to sift through them when you’ve lost the game, because we’ve got really high expectations of this group. And I don’t know whether in that first 20 minutes there wasn’t a realisation of how good we can be and that’s why we sat back a little bit, but that’s my job to get the guys ready and firing right from the first minute.
“So yes, definite positives, and I’ll look through them at the weekend to cheer me up. But there were definitely some areas of sloppiness. I think we just need to back ourselves and back our game and know how good we can be.”
On Mark Bennett's injury
“It was disappointing that Mark had to go off. He just landed a little bit awkwardly and didn’t recover that quickly from it. I’ll find out from the physios how he’s getting on.
“He was influential on the ball. I thought Chris Dean when he came on was really busy as well at 12, and shifting James Lang out to 13. It was good to get him some time involved as well.”
