Blair: "We have to learn our lessons quickly."
Head Coach Mike Blair says his side 'have to learn their lessons quickly' after Edinburgh fell to a last-second drop-goal which saw Benetton claim victory in Treviso on Saturday afternoon.
Edinburgh lead 25-27 with five minutes remaining following Jaco van der Walt's successful penalty, however the hosts struck late on to make it 28-27, leaving the capital club with two losing bonus points, instead of five.
"We're gutted. We put ourselves in a position to win the game but didn’t do it. We let them back into the game which was disappointing," said Blair.
"When we got our game going we looked very strong on the ball, very strong on defence, but we just need to get that consistency and get that going throughout the full 80 minutes.
"Benetton did well to get back into it and it was an excellent kick at the end for the win, but we gave them that opportunity."
Despite the defeat, Blair said there are positives to take out of the Round 2 loss and learnings that the capital club will build on week to week.
"The upsides are there for everyone to see. The learnings they get out of it are things we can build on week to week. There were positive stuff in there but it was frustrating as we should have got the win today.
"We have to learn our lessons quickly. There are a few issues near the end of the Scarlets game as well when we were ahead and let the Scarlets back into the game.
"There were similar situations here. I spoke to the guys in the changing room. It is not on the half-backs this. This is about everyone in terms overall game management, understanding with three or four minutes to go we have to make sure we win this game.
"All of that discipline, clear decision-making, looking after the ball. There are plenty areas to work on but when we click there are some positive stuff in there."
