Bennett voted January's Scottish Building Society Player of the Month

Scotland international Mark Bennett was today voted Scottish Building Society Player of the Month for January.

The outside centre kicked off 2022 in rampant form, helping Edinburgh on their way to big wins against Cardiff Rugby and CA Brive at DAM Health Stadium.

Bennett's performance against Cardiff will live long in the memory of Edinburgh supporters. The Cumnock-man caught the eye immediately against the Welsh capital side, bursting through the defence to set up Emiliano Boffelli to score in the corner. Bennett went one better, acrobatically finishing in the corner himself, before scoring a solo effort late on to put the match to bed.

The numbers back up his impressive display, as he made 135 metres and nine tackle breaks against the Welsh side. Bennett also bagged a score in the 10-try victory against CA Brive, capping off a great week as the centre was subsequently recalled to the Scotland squad for the Guinness Six Nations.

Bennett said: "I’m delighted, it was a good month for me personally and as a club. We played some really good rugby, and I want us to push on with it.

"Cardiff was one of my best performances in an Edinburgh shirt, it was nice to get the ball in space and do what I do best. I loved the Cardiff game, and hopefully there’s more of that to come.

I’m loving it in Scotland camp, I’ve enjoyed being back. It’s awesome being back around it all."

Sponsored and backed by Scottish Building Society, the initiative sees Edinburgh’s Main Club Partner generously donate £500 to Bennett's charity of choice, Edinburgh Children's Hospital.

Based in the Scottish capital, the charity helps seriously ill babies, children and young people by supporting their medical care, mental health and family’s wellbeing.

On the donation, Bennett said: "We want to engage with the local area, and the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital do brilliant work, so it was a really easy choice for me"

Head Coach Mike Blair added: "Mark has been so impressive for us, it's great to see him pick up January's Player of the Month after a really stellar start to the year.

"It's fantastic to see his form rewarded with a Scotland call-up as well. It's something Mark has worked extremely hard for, so i'm delighted to see this recognised."

Paul Denton, Chief Executive Officer for Scottish Building Society, said:

“Mark Bennett is a very worthwhile winner for his strong performances last month which has been vindicated with a return to the Scotland team for the 6 Nations tournament.

“Scottish Building Society is proud to be the main club partner for Edinburgh Rugby and we both share a strong focus on strengthening links with the local community.

“That was behind our decision to reward the player of the month with a £500 donation to the charity of their choice and both Mark and Edinburgh Children’s Hospital are worthy winners.”
