New Year new target for Edinburgh Rugby supporters
Edinburgh Rugby’s Heineken Champions Cup match against Sale Sharks at BT Murrayfield Stadium has been proposed as a revised launchpad for the graduated return of rugby crowds, in a Scottish Rugby submittal to the Scottish Government.
The proposal originally tabled the club’s 1872 Cup derby against Glasgow Warriors (on 2 January) as the beginning of fans’ graduated return however – following further discussion with Scottish Government – welcoming a small crowd to watch the match against the English Premiership side is now the target.
Today’s update from Scottish Rugby’s Threat Management Group, stated: “Going forward, this group continue preparations for a potential return of spectators to the stadium sometime in the New Year and are currently working towards plans to welcome a small crowd for the Edinburgh v Sale Sharks game on the 16th January, subject to Government guidance.
"After regular conversations with the Government, we are confident in our graduated return to crowds proposal and committed to proactively pushing these plans forward.
“However, we completely understand the difficulties the relaxations in the run up to Christmas could impose on operations in the new year and will continue to follow Government advice.”
The proposal then seeks to work up towards larger crowds at the 2021 Guinness Six Nations Tests at the home of Scottish rugby.
