Final Girls Series Event to feature at 1872 Cup decider

This Saturday’s 1872 Cup decider (21 May, kick-off 6.30pm) will play host to the final Girls Series Event of the season, with the tournament running on the back pitches of BT Murrayfield as part of the build-up to the evening’s decisive intercity derby.

With gates opening at 4.30pm, supporters will be able to catch the final rounds of action with matches taking place right next to the DAM Health Stadium Fan Zone on the west side of the national stadium.

With plenty of great food and beverage options, as well as live music and community activities, the DAM Health Stand Fan Zone is the place to be this Saturday, where supporters can now cheer on the next generation of Scotland stars who’ll be taking part in the all-girl event next door.

All teams competing in the Girls Series Event will attend Saturday night’s regular season finale, with the derby against Glasgow Warriors set to decide the winner of the 1872 Cup, Scottish x Italian Shield, and thus Heineken Champions Cup qualification.

Scottish Rugby East Regional Manager, Alastair Chalmers, said: “Saturday’s event at BT Murrayfield is the seventh and final event of the season, with previous events having been held at Meadowmill, Currie and Gala.

“There have been 17 clubs in total from the East region engaging with the programme this season, and over 200 girls making early steps on their rugby journey.

“Saturday is a fantastic way to finish up the season in the shadow of the national stadium. The girls are buzzing for the opportunity and, for many, it’s also their first chance to see Edinburgh Rugby in action as well!”

The Girls Series Event programme seeks to remove barriers to participation by offering high-quality, age and stage-appropriate game-play opportunities for girls aged U12 to U18, no matter their level of experience. Events are held regularly in each of Scottish Rugby’s five regions, with the main focus on participation and development.

Clubs can send groups of players along to the events, regardless of whether they can field a whole team or not. Groups are matched up to ensure everyone gets appropriate game time and opportunities to play. Find out more about Saturday's 1872 Cup derby here.
