Edinburgh Rugby pull their socks up for ‘club appreciation night’
Edinburgh Rugby players will pull up the playing socks of their boyhood clubs for their Friday night clash against Benetton in the United Rugby Championship next month as part of a wider appreciation night of the grassroots game (3 December, kick-off 7.45pm).
The likes of Scotland internationalists Stuart McInally and Darcy Graham will be sporting the maroon of Watsonians and the green of Hawick, while the team’s overseas players are also getting in on the act and embracing a local side to further strengthen links between Edinburgh Rugby and city’s amateur clubs.
South African prop Luan de Bruin has opted to represent Corstorphine Cougars RFC on the night – a side now local to the South African prop – with each player paying tribute to those clubs that do so much for rugby in the city and wider regions.
Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director, Douglas Struth, said: “The city and region’s clubs and schools are the lifeblood of the game, and this club, and we want to see more and more local lads progressing through the ranks to become legends in an Edinburgh Rugby jersey.
“Next month’s club appreciation night will be a meaningful tribute to clubland when we’re back home after the international break, and we hope players and members will come out in force for a night out in their club colours, as we celebrate the grassroots game.”
Edinburgh Rugby will soon be contacting clubs directly to offer discounted tickets to their players and members, with December’s Benetton match-up the first-ever fixture to be hosted at DAM Health Stadium under Friday night lights.
Edinburgh Rugby is encouraging supporters to wear their club colours to the clash as they look to maintain their unbeaten United Rugby Championship record in the new home.
Stewart Pilkington, Club President at Corstorphine Cougars RFC, said: “What a fantastic gesture by Edinburgh Rugby and their players to show support for their local clubs in recognition of the effort put in to making rugby happen in Edinburgh and Scotland.
“It’s going to be a real boost to all our members as our club colours grace the pitch at Edinburgh’s DAM Health stadium for the first time.
“Many of our members are season ticket holders so they’ll be particularly noisy when Luan De Bruin gets the ball in his hands!”
As part of the evening, the club will also host the Edinburgh Rugby Inclusive Team for a half-time match, backed and sponsored by Main Club Partner Scottish Building Society, while the players’ chosen club sides will all be referenced in the matchday programme, as well as on DAM Health Stadium’s big screens.
Supporters can also look forward to local club focussed content across the Edinburgh Rugby social channels in the build-up to the fixture as the capital side celebrates all things grassroots rugby.
Tickets for the United Rugby Championship fixture against Benetton are now on general sale with the match the final chance to watch Edinburgh Rugby in action at DAM Health Stadium in 2021.
