1872 Cup crowd approach made to Scottish Government

Edinburgh Rugby’s traditional festive 1872 Cup derby against Glasgow Warriors at BT Murrayfield was today confirmed as the launchpad in a Scottish Rugby submittal to the Scottish Government around graduated crowds.

The update from the governing body’s ‘Threat Management Group’, stated: “Overall, we have a plan previously approved by Government and further refined.

“It has been well tested and, as we continue to align with all Government requests, we believe we are ready as soon as the Government allows to welcome spectators back to our venues.”

A specific request has been included for a crowd of 5,000 supporters at the traditional festive derby match on Saturday 2 January.

The submittal then looks to work up to 10,000 for a professional club game at BT Murrayfield prior to the Guinness Six Nations, with 25,000 spectators at each of Scotland’s home matches at the national stadium the target.

The pack follows documents submitted by Scottish Rugby last week in collaboration with Active Scotland and other sport CMOs, outlining how to safely increase attendance at outdoor sporting events in Scotland.
