Edinburgh battle to fourth win on the bounce

Edinburgh made it four URC wins on the bounce with a bonus-point victory against Benetton under the Friday night lights, winning 24-10 to avenge their early season loss to the Italian side.

The home side marked ‘Club Appreciation Night’ in style, with the players wearing their club team socks to celebrate grassroots rugby.

In a scrappy encounter in the cold, it was Benetton who took an early lead after a breathless start to the match, with Leonardo Marin knocking over a simple kick for the first points of the match. [0-3]

Edinburgh had the better of the opening stages, with the electric Darcy Graham looking dangerous with ball in hand, and the home side soon hit the front.

The visitors were reduced to 14 for 10 minutes after a cynical deliberate knock on from Benetton captain Dewaldt Duvenage, halting Edinburgh’s progress after a stunning break from the returning Hamish Watson.

The men in blue didn’t take long to capitalise on the yellow card through a score from Darcy Graham - wearing the famous green socks of Hawick.

The forwards laid the foundation, with quick hands from Vellacott and Kinghorn giving the winger a simple finish in the corner. [5-3]

Edinburgh further cashed in on the sin-binning with a spectacular score, Boffelli dotted down in the corner to grab his second try in as many games for the capital side, however the real story was in the build-up. Blair Kinghorn made a lung-busting solo run, and was backed up by the mazy and elusive Graham to create a massive overload out wide. [10-3]

Edinburgh extended their lead shortly into the second half thanks to some calamitous play from Benetton. The away side looked to launch an attack from their own goal line, however Edinburgh pressure forced a loose, looping pass into no man’s land, to give Kinghorn the simple task of dotting the ball down. [17-3]

The Italians were never going to fall away without a fight, and hit back after a period of pressure on the Edinburgh line.

The capital side held the visitors out as long as they could with some huge goal-line tackles, however the pressure eventually told as replacement Manuel Zuliani forced his way over to reduce the arrears. [17-10]

Edinburgh managed to wrestle back momentum, and secure the bonus-point win late on. Pyrgos gave the home side field position with a smart dart down the wing, setting up the pack to rumble over, with McInally at the base to provide the finishing touch. [24-10]

The win sees Edinburgh continue their winning streak, and their unbeaten record at the DAM Health Stadium, and they will hope they can carry their form into Europe against Saracens next week.

Player of the match

Magnus Bradbury produced a typically physical performance, carrying dominantly for the full 80 to secure the player of the match award.

A fitting reward on a special night, with the Scotland international picking up his 100th cap for the club, while wearing the socks of his childhood club Oban Lorne RFC.
