14-man Edinburgh hold on for crucial BP win

14-man Edinburgh held on for a vital bonus-point win against Zebre, with Jaco van der Walt snatching a last minute penalty to win the game.

Edinburgh were run incredibly close by a fired up Zebre Parma side – hunting for their first win of the season – with either side racking up a bonus point in an entertaining encounter at DAM Health Stadium.

The hosts hit the front almost immediately, with Blair Kinghorn grubbering through for Mark Bennett to dot down with a minute on the clock. It seemed like it would be another big win at the DAM, however the visitors hit back, awarded a penalty try with Glen Young illegally stopping the Zebre winger in the corner.

Young’s tackle saw him spend 10 minutes in the sin-bin, and the visitors turned up the pressure looking for a score. The score finally came, with Zambonin offloading well to Laloifi to go over in the corner.

Edinburgh went into the second half with a slender lead, hitting back immediately after the Zebre score through Cammy Hutchison. Pyrgos made a dart from the base of a maul, with Hutchison running a good support line to crash over.

The second half started in disastrous style for the hosts. Zebre’s left winger, Simone Gesi, glided through the Edinburgh defence to score a solo effort, before Marshall Sykes was shown red for a dangerous clear out at the ruck.

Down to 14, and down on the scoreboard, Edinburgh showed their mettle – fronting up to claw themselves into a lead. Pierre Schoeman took the bull by the horns, carrying like a man possessed to put the outnumbered attackers on the front foot. The loosehead, who earned the Player of the Match award for the second week in a row, then burrowed over from close range to put the capital side into the lead.

Mark Bennett then scored his second of the game, pouncing on a loose ball on half-way before charging through to score. Zebre set up a tense finish though, with replacement David Sisi powering over under the posts.

The game was sealed late on though, with Jaco van der Walt coming up clutch with a high-pressure penalty in the dying embers of the game.
