Barclay skippered Scotland to impressive victories over England and France in the 2018 6 Nations before the back-row announced his decision to sign for Edinburgh for the 2018/19 season.

Born in Hong Kong, Barclay attended Dollar Academy where he captained the school's 1st XV to victory against the High School of Dundee in the Scottish Schools Cup final at Murrayfield in 2004.

The back-row was named in Scotland's 2007 World Cup squad after a run of strong performances for club side Glasgow Warriors. He made his debut against New Zealand in the pool stages in a weakened team, losing 40–0. Barclay joined Scarlets at the start of the 2013/14 season and swiftly became a fan favourite as he helped the Welsh side to a Guinness PRO12 Championship, with the Parc y Scarlets outift defeating Munster 46-22 in a one-sided affair.

After being named Scotland captain, Barclay skippered Scotland to impressive victories over England and France in the 2018 6 Nations before the back-row announced his decision to sign for Edinburgh for the 2018/19 season.

After missing a large portion of the 2018/19 season through injury, Barclay made his long awaited debut for the capital side against Leinster in March 2018, before scoring his first try for the club against Ulster three week's later.
