Steven Lawrie first joined returned to Edinburgh Rugby in the summer of 2011 after spending two seasons away from the capital in the English Championship playing, and captaining, Doncaster Knights. Steve played for Scotland at A, under-19 and under-21 levels as well as appearing in the national sevens squad, making his debut in the 2008 IRB Twickenham tournament and going on to play a week later in the Murrayfield event. His Scotland A debut came in the 25-0 win over USA Eagles at Netherdale in November 2010, and he came off the bench in the victory over Italy A in January 2011.
Steve first joined the club as an apprentice in 2005 and moved on to a full contract in summer 2007. His debut for Edinburgh was as a replacement in the Celtic League victory against Leinster at Donnybrook in November that year. Another replacement appearance followed in the next game (against Glasgow), but he had to wait more than a year for his first start for Edinburgh: coincidentally, that also was against Leinster at Donnybrook in the Heineken Cup match in January 2006.
Steve captained the Edinburgh under-18, under-19 and under-20 teams who won their respective district championships in successive years (2002 to 2004), and he played for Scotland under-19 in season 2002-2003. At that time he was with Currie, and after a switch to Watsonians he made his under-21 international debut as a substitute in the February 2005 match against France in Bourgoin. He also had replacement appearances in the home matches against Ireland, Italy, and Wales that year as well as three of the world championship games in Argentina, scoring a try against Australia. The Stewart’s Melville College former pupil is a physical education graduate from Edinburgh University.
