Edinburgh favourites Ben Cairns, Struan Dewar and Steven Turnbull were this week on hand to help open a new multi-use games facility in the playground of Stockbridge Primary School.

The equipment incorporates goal ends that can be used for football and hockey, as well as basketball hoops.

Cairns confirmed: “I was delighted to unveil the multi-use games area at Stockbridge Primary School. The benefits of playing team sports are well-known and it’s vital that we encourage children to engage in team sports from an early age.

“Not only do team sports provide children with the opportunity to be physically active but they help them to learn valuable life skills such as the ability to work with others and to think critically and solve problems.”

Stockbridge Primary School head teacher Faye Calder-Kelly said: “The children are absolutely thrilled by the new equipment. As a city centre school, we have limited outside space, so we have to be creative in how we use the playground area. And, as the playground is also open outside of school hours and during the school holidays, we hope that the games area will be used by all children in the local community."

Edinburgh’s community programme has delivered more than 700 player appearances so far this season, with clubs, schools and other community groups among the beneficiaries. For more information on player appearances, and to find out how to request one, please click HERE.
