PREVIEW | Cockerill: "I'd love the supporters to get behind their city."

Head Coach Richard Cockerill has issued a rallying cry for Edinburgh supporters to get behind their city as his side take on three-times Heineken Champions Cup Champions Toulon this Saturday.

Edinburgh face-off against the French powerhouse in their first home European fixture of the season (kick-off 3.15pm) and will be looking to build on last weekend’s promising performance against Montpellier which saw the capital said claim a valuable losing bonus point.

“A bumper crowd would definitely give us an edge,” said Cockerill. “We’re talking about Edinburgh playing Montpellier and nearly coming away with the win.

“We’re bringing the three times European Champions to BT Murrayfield to play Edinburgh. It’s to a point new territory for us in recent history, so I’d love the supporters to come along and get behind their city and support us.

“We’re worth supporting. The boys are putting a lot of effort in and we’re not far away from being a very good side.”

Last weekend saw Edinburgh come close to pulling off an unlikely win against a star-studded Montpellier side at the GGL Stadium and Cockerill insists his side making great strides at European rugby’s top table.

“We played well against Montpellier and probably did enough to win the game. We were disappointed that we didn’t come away more than a point. We let in a few sloppy tries, but we fought hard and got ourselves back in the game.

“We had our fair share of opportunities to win the game, so from that point of view it was disappointing, but from a positive we did some really good things against a strong Montpellier team.

“I think some of the comments from the players at the weekend was: they weren’t as good as we thought they were going to be.’My attitude is: no, they’re good, we’re just good as well.

“We’re a good team. We’ve just go believe in ourselves, and believe that we can play at a higher level – because we can. The guys do it in a Scotland shirt and now they’ve got to do it in an Edinburgh shirt.

After suffering defeat at home to Newcastle Falcons in their opening Pool 5 fixture, Saturday’s visitors, Toulon, will be arriving at BT Murrayfield with a point to prove.

This weekend’s clash is the first meeting between the two sides and with both teams earning a single point out of their opening match, the contest already has the feeling of ‘win or bust.’

"We’ve got to do it against another very good French team in Toulon,” explained Cockerill. “They had a poor result against Newcastle Falcons at the weekend and they’ll be coming to BT Murrayfield to prove a point.

“But we’ve got a point to prove as well, so we’re going to work really hard this week and make sure we get those key moments right. If we play like we did at the weekend then there’s no reason we can’t get the right result.

"We’re going to try our best. We’ve always said we’re a side that’s developing, but we’re learning our lessons quickly. As I’ve always said, we’re going to try and win every time we play. We didn’t on Saturday, but we gave Montpellier one hell of a fright. The next step is to start picking off these big teams and we’re going to try and that against Toulon this Saturday.”
