NEWS | Edinburgh sign Baggott as Fenton extends his stay

Edinburgh have secured the signing of BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy stand-off Jason Baggott on a one-year-deal, whilst 22-year-old hooker Cameron Fenton has extended his stay with the club for a further year.

Baggott, 22, has been enrolled in the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy since arriving from South African outfit Southern Kings in July 2015. The Cape Town native - who is attached to BT Premiership side Melrose - graduates to a professional contract, which will come into full effect next season.

Baggott – who lifted the BT Scottish Cup with Melrose in 2017 – expressed his delighted at joining Edinburgh, and said: “I am really happy to have signed my first professional deal with Edinburgh.

“It's an environment that I’m obviously familiar with, having trained with the squad throughout the season, and I’m excited to be a part of the club’s future moving forward.”

After joining the club in September 2017 following a successful trial, versatile front-row Fenton has enjoyed a breakout season.

The Strathallan School product, who began his career with Howe of Fife, made his Edinburgh debut in the 37-10 Guinness PRO14 victory over Ospreys in November of last year.

Fenton has made 9 appearances for the club and in January scored a vital bonus-point securing try in the 37-7 win over Southern Kings. The hooker once again displayed his try-scoring abilities against Dragons on Friday night, as he crossed the whitewash at the death, securing yet another bonus-point for his side.

On penning a new deal, Fenton said: “I’m really happy to re-sign with Edinburgh. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and I’m excited to push on and see what the future holds.”

Head Coach, Richard Cockerill added: “Cameron has been in good form since breaking into the first team last year and we’re excited to see how he develops next season.

“Jason is a young player who has impressed in both training, and whilst playing for Melrose, and we’re glad that he’s going to be a part of the club moving forward.”
