County Out Muscle Selkirk In U18 Cup Final

Stirling County were crowned National Under-18 Youth League Cup champions at Murrayfield today after a convincing 41-13 win over Selkirk Youth RFC.

Despite the scoreline the Borderers started brightly and, accepting they would not take on the formidable Stirling side in an arm wrestle up front, sought to move the ball - a successful tack for the majority of the first half however, as time wore on, the difference in physicality upfront (Stirling’s starting pack features seven Scotland under-18 players) was ultimately the difference in the two sides.

Stirling County were crowned National Under-18 Youth League Cup champions at Murrayfield today after a convincing 41-13 win over Selkirk Youth RFC.

Despite the scoreline the Borderers started brightly and, accepting they would not take on the formidable Stirling side in an arm wrestle up front, sought to move the ball.

This was a successful tack for the majority of the first half however, as time wore on, the difference in physicality upfront (Stirling’s starting pack features seven Scotland under-18 players) began to tell.

Despite County scoring four tries in the first period through centre Matthew Lamb (2) and forwards Adam Sinclar and Adam Ashe, the Borderers kept County within reach for much of the half, with a try from winger Allan Smith, converted by inside centre John Welsh and two Welsh penalties sticking them to the County coattails.

It was the fourth score from Ashe before the break that proved decisive as the teams went in 11 points apart at the break (24-13).

While clearly very fit, fronting up to the physicality of the County had taken its toll on Selkirk who defended doggedly throughout the second half but ultimately could not hold off a further three County tries which came in from stand-off Jack Urquart followed by two late scores to from flankers Chris Arnold and Shaun MacDonald.
