Edinburgh Rugby secured a home European quarter-final with an emphatic 49-3 victory over Timisoara Saracens in front of a sold-put Myreside.

A capacity crowd of over 5200 fans watched on as the capital club ran in seven tries to confirm their status as Pool 5 winners in the European Challenge Cup going into the knockout stages.

Edinburgh secured a bonus-point before the interval, with Neil Cochrane leading the way in scoring two tries in a man of the match performance on his 50th cap for the club.

Cornell Du Preez, Blair Kinghorn and Michael Allen joined Cochrane on the scoresheet before the break, with the hooker again dotting down after the turn along with Jason Tovey and Damien Hoyland.

Duncan Weir recorded a 100% record from the tee kicking five conversions, with his replacement, Tovey, adding the extras to the final two scores.

The capital club were roared on to the first score of the game after 12 minutes when Cochrane peeled off the back of a rolling maul for the try.

The home side treated the crowd again when Tom Brown, Magnus Bradbury and Jamie Ritchie linked-up in the wide channels before releasing back-row Du Preez, who rampaged in for the second score (14-0)

Edinburgh showed no sign of letting up and Kinghorn used his nous to read a Timisoara attack and pluck a wayward opposition pass out of the air, before racing in from 50 metres out for the try (21-0).

Lovely hands from the black and red backline set-up centre Allen for the bonus-point score on the cusp of half-time (28-0).

The Romanian outfit scored their first and only points of the game through a 41st minute penalty, with Edinburgh replying again through Cochrane, whose second try was scored in similar fashion to his first (35-3).

Shortly after Timisoara missed a shot at goal, replacement Sam Hidalgo-Clyne was shown a yellow-card and Edinburgh reduced to 14-men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Edinburgh again rallied with replacement Tovey gliding through a gap in the opposition defence to cross the line and touch down for his side’s sixth score, to which he duly converted (42-3).

He was closely followed under the posts by Hoyland, who closed his side’s try account for the night when a period of fluid rugby afforded the wing the space to cruise through a gap and score under the posts.  Tovey’s conversion would be the final scoring act of the night (49-3).
