Edinburgh Rugby vs Cardiff Blues, Fri, 11/04/2014 - 19:45

Edinburgh Rugby scored three tries for the second consecutive time in front of a packed Meggetland Stadium this evening, but unfortunately a late surge was not enough to see them seal a win.

The first half began at a furious pace with both sides matching each other for penalties and tries before second-row Filo Paulo’s late score gave Cardiff the upper hand going into the break.

After the interval, the visitors added to their lead almost immediately, and though Edinburgh scored a further two tries of their own, they fell agonisingly short at the death.

Both sides wasted no time opening their respective tallies for the evening with Blues fly-half Gareth Davies and Edinburgh full-back, Jack Cuthbert trading penalties within the opening five minutes.

The capacity Meggetland crowd did not have to wait long to see the first try of the game either, with Edinburgh centre Matt Scott surging through a static Cardiff defence to touch down under the posts. Cuthbert added the extras and with ten minutes on the clock, the Gunners found themselves 10-3 up.

Not to be outdone, the visitors soon levelled the scores with centre Cory Allen capitalising on an overlap wide on the right and crossing for a try in the corner. Gareth Davies made no mistake with the conversion and added the tie’s twentieth point in as many minutes.

The remainder of the first half provided less scoreboard activity but no less on the pitch. Both sides created chances to rouse the packed stadium, but it was the visitors who were able to convert before the break with second-row Filo Paulo surging over the line and Davies once again adding the extras.

Half-time: Edinburgh Rugby 10-17 Cardiff Blues

Cardiff were quickest to adapt to the change of ends, and just two minutes in to the second half, full-back Dan Fish crossed for the visitors’ third try of the game after some clever hands wide on the left.

Stunned by the Blue’s lightning re-start, Edinburgh Rugby set about plotting their resurgence.

Tom Brown’s tenacity in the tackle was enough to lift the home crowd from their seats, and when the winger crossed for a try just minutes later, the stadium erupted. Cuthbert was impeccable with the boot once again and with 30 minutes left to play the home side were just seven points adrift. (17-24)

After another blistering start to a half, both sides struggled to further their tallies for the long period of play that followed.

Unfortunately for the home side it was Cardiff that broke the temporary deadlock as replacement winger Dafydd Hewit crossed in the right hand corner just five minutes from time.

Kicker Davies was unsuccessful with the conversion for the first time in the evening but with so little time left, the 12-point gap seemed too great a deficit for the capital city club to overturn.

With the last play of the game Edinburgh back-row Cornell du Preez battled his way over the white line for a hard earned try, but with 80 minutes on the clock, it was mere consolation.
