Phil Godman in trainingDrop-goal hero Phil Godman today launched Edinburgh Rugby’s week-long rallying cry for fans to turn out in force at Sunday’s decisive Heineken Cup match against London Irish at Murrayfield (kick-off 3.15pm).

The stand-off’s last-second winner against Racing Metro put the club top of Pool 2 with the English Premiership side the last to stand between the club and a Heineken Cup quarter-final.

Godman said: “We’ve put ourselves in a great position to progress to the last eight in front of our home support.

“It’s fantastic to be here but we’re not taking anything for granted. We’ve a big week ahead of us to ensure we’re prepared for another huge challenge.

“Sunday will be a massive day for Edinburgh Rugby. I'd encourage all fans of rugby in Scotland to come along and help us earn our place among Europe’s elite.”

Last month Edinburgh Rugby topped the Scottish RaboDirect PRO12 attendance record when more than 13,000 fans turned out at Murrayfield for the 1872 Cup derby against Glasgow Warriors.

With the crucial encounter beckoning, Godman expects the club to surpass its Heineken Cup record, which it set against London Wasps in 2008 (7,711).

He said: “A couple of years ago a crowd of more than 7,000 watched us take on Wasps so, with student tickets cut to a fiver and a special offer for groups of U18s [adult free with every eight U18s], we hope to smash that for what is club’s most important match in almost a decade.

“If ever there was a time to come and try out a professional rugby game or introduce a friend to Edinburgh Rugby, this is it.”
