EDINBURGH 62-13 CONNACHT (11.9.2009)
Friday, 11 September 2009

Mark Robertson contributed two tries with Ben Cairns, Chris Paterson, captain Allister Hogg, Alan MacDonald, Andrew Turnbull and Roddy Grant also crossing the whitewash as Edinburgh chalked up a record home Magners League win over Connacht - winning by 49 points.

The visitors responded with two penalties from Ian Keatley and a consolation try from Fionn Carr (with Miah Nikora adding the conversion).

Nevertheless, in front of a crowd of 3, 042, Paterson, who scored 27 points on the night, contributed two penalties and eight conversions to ensure Edinburgh finished with a huge winning margin.

Robertson opened Edinburgh's account with a beautifully worked try - cooly side-stepping the last man - before dotting down. Cairns then hacked the ball deep into Connacht territory before chasing through and scoring in the corner. The first half was a real war of attrition at the breakdown and, as expected before the game, Connacht were a tough nut to crack. But Edinburgh rolled their sleeves up and took care of business with ruthless precision.

At half time, Edinburgh were in front 20-6, but it was far from comfortable and it required some more sheer hard graft to ensure the momentum swung back in favour of the hosts. Paterson provided the perfect response when he scored his second try in successive weeks when he shrugged off the Connacht defence to dot down.

A few minutes later, Robertson added his second in thrilling fashion before captain Allister Hogg led by example - accelerating through to score.

Alan MacDonald scored only his third try in the Black and Red soon after to make it 46-6 and his score was followed by a trademark score from speedster Andrew Turnbull - hurtling up the turf before finding the try-line.

Roddy Grant's debut score for Edinburgh finished off the try-fest and ensured Edinburgh achieved a memorable result.
