ROBERTSON TARGETING SENIOR HONOURS PDF Print
Monday, 08 February 2010

Mark Robertson admits he enjoyed his late call-up into Scotland A’s squad on Friday night and says that try-scoring experience has added further fuel to his desire to follow in the footsteps of his father Keith by representing the senior side in the future.

Edinburgh wing Robertson was drafted in as emergency cover for Simon Danielli after the Ulster back was forced to withdraw from the match with a hamstring injury.

As a result, the 25-year-old seized his chance in the second half after coming off the bench and responded with a well-taken try in the 34-19 defeat.

Now Robertson says he wants to generate some quality form heading into the final stages of the season because he is targeting a call-up into the senior Scotland squad.

Robertson said: “To be honest, it was probably the easiest try I’ve ever scored. I would have liked to have got some more game time on Friday night.

“But when I got on I was quite happy with my performance; I got some ball and made some decent runs.

“The team performance was disappointing, but we had only trained together for a couple of days beforehand, so it was always going to be tough.”

At the half-way mark last season, Robertson was Edinburgh’s leading try scorer and had plundered a special solo effort in the groundbreaking Heineken Cup win at Castres.

But this season Robertson has only contributed two tries and, after suffering from a hamstring injury, has only started 10 games – much to his frustration.

He added: “I have only missed two games with a hamstring injury and for all of the rest I’ve either been on the bench or starting.

“I’ve been in and out of the side which has been frustrating. But I just need to hit some decent form and score some tries.

“I want to keep pushing on because I want to give myself the best chance possible of getting into the national team – that is one of my main objectives.

“I want to play for my country, so sooner I can do that the better. But in order to be able to do that, you have to be performing well for your club and playing week in, week out.

“I need to do well if I start against Munster and if not then I need to be pushing other boys as hard as possible, so that I can get closer to being in that full national squad.”
