Allister Hogg admits he was pleased that Edinburgh won the David Lloyd 1872 Cup following the aggregate victory over rivals Glasgow, but acknowledged the 25-20 defeat at Firhill had been a morale-sapping blow for the team.

Despite leading early on through an opportunist try from Geoff Cross, Edinburgh got bogged down in a midfield traffic jam and gave away a series of soft penalties which Dan Parks put on the scoreboard.

As a result, Hogg (pictured trying to stop Graeme Morrison’s first half try) says the team were devastated by the loss and are determined to learn from their mistakes.

Hogg said: “We are obviously pleased to have won the 1872 Cup, but we are really disappointed with the performance. It is not the same sort of feeling; losing the game, but still getting the trophy.

“We would have been much better to have won both the games. Cairnsy (Ben Cairns) took his try well though at the end so at least we got the bonus point and salvaged something.

“But we didn’t play the game the way we wanted to and we let them dictate things. That is the most frustrating aspect.

“We’re all bitterly disappointed and we need to have a close look at the video. We knew what Glasgow were going to bring; it wasn’t as though we were caught off-guard.

“They just out-muscled us at the breakdown and were really direct. Our discipline let us down. We gave them field position and fair play to Parksy (Dan Parks) because he took his two drop goals really well.

“We were just playing in the right areas of the pitch. So any indiscretions that we gave away they managed to capitalise on.”
