Will Helu

The club's first new signing of 2015, William Helu joined the European Cup finalists in June 2015 from London Wasps.

Helu played in New Zealand in the ITM Cup for three years before moving to FC Grenoble. He then spent a season at Rugby Roma before moving to Bristol, returned to the Italian club after a year, then joined Wasps for the start of the 2013/14 season. In his two seasons with the London outfit he ammassed 28 caps and 70 points.

He made 21 appearances in his first season at Wasps and scored nine tries, including a hattrick against Rugby Viadana in the Amlin Challenge Cup. Helu also impressed with his dazzling footwork, most notably in the match against Exeter Chiefs which earned him the ‘hotstepper’ moniker. He was awarded the Players' Player of the Season, alongside James Haskell, for his performance that season.

Helu said: "I jumped at the chance to move to Edinburgh, after meeting Alan [Solomons] and hearing him speak about the potential of the club. I think I've got a lot to give on the field - a lot of ball in hand, running rugby."

Capped 23 times by Tonga, he was a member of the international squad that beat France in Rugby World Cup 2011.

Though his experience of playing in Scotland prior to the move was limited to an outing in Aberdeen, when Tonga beat the national side at Pittodrie, he enjoyed renewing his acquaintance with a former team mate on arrival at BT Murrayfield.

He said: "I played with Neil Cochrane at Wasps in 2013/14 and it's good to link up with a familiar face."

After pre-season with the club Helu joined with the Tongan national team competing in Rugby World Cup 2015 and returned to BT Murrayfield in mid October, making his debut for Edinburgh in the win over Ulster.

His first try came against Munster and his second at his former home ground, Stade des Alpes, in the European Cup defeat to Grenoble.
