Sam Beard joined Edinburgh Rugby in the early stages of the 2013/14 campaign from New Zealand side, Bay of Plenty.
The former Canterbury Crusaders' development player enjoyed a steady progression through the New Zealand rugby ranks, where he found himself on the cusp of Super Rugby.
Born in Timaru, Beard moved to Christchurch to pursue a career in rugby and kicked off matters in earnest with Burnside's championship-winning team.
He was then called up to the provincial Canterbury B team and, after an impressive season in which he was named player of the year, was brought into the Crusader Knights, the development squad of the Super Rugby giants.
Bay of Plenty then offered the midfielder the next step on the provincial ladder, where he played out his first season before being approached to join the capital club.
An exponent of running rugby with an attacking style, Beard adds further depth and competition to Edinburgh Rugby's midfield.
Following his arrival in the capital, Beard set about establishing himself as part of Alan Solomons' matchday squad and made his RaboDirect PRO12 debut away to Ulster in November 2013.
