Edinburgh head coach Rob Moffat was irked by his team’s defence as they lost 49-28 to Newport Gwent Dragons at Rodney Parade on Sunday night. Edinburgh did claim a bonus point having scored four tries through Alan MacDonald, a penalty try, Ben Cairns and Ross Ford.

But the result, coupled with Munster’s 18-12 win at Connacht, means Edinburgh have slipped to fifth place in the league. Moffat believes a play-off place can still be attained . . . though only if there’s improvement ahead of the fixtures against Ulster and Leinster.

Rob Moffat: Aiming for improvement for next Sunday's Murrayfield game against Ulster

“You cannot defend like that today – we gave away some really soft scores,” he said.  “You cannot miss as many one-on-one tackles as we missed today and expect to win.”

“Defensively we looked uncomfortable when they had the ball and, in fact, whichever team had the ball looked dangerous, so even when we trailed 14-28 in the second-half I felt we’d still score another try or two.

“We’re in the position we are in the league because we’ve lost our last two games and we’ve a lot of improving to do, especially in defence, for the Ulster game at Murrayfield next Sunday.

“But there’s no point in feeling sorry for ourselves.  We’ll aim to rectify things for next Sunday,” he added.
