ImageFelipe Contepomi saw his stoppage time penalty effort rattle the post to enable Edinburgh to chalk up a well-deserved win over league leaders Leinster at Murrayfield.

Before the game, Leinster knew all they had to do in order to secure the championship was record a bonus point win over an Edinburgh team that had lost their two previous matches against Cardiff and Glasgow.

But Edinburgh responded superby and the team produced a defensive masterclass to keep Brian O'Driscoll and co at bay in an entertaining final home match of the season.

Thrilling tries from hooker Ross Ford and back rower David Callam enabled Edinburgh to come out on top with Phil Godman's boot adding the other points to the home side's final points total.

Luke Fitzgerald scored a late try with only 10 minutes of the match remaining to put Leinster within touching distance of Edinburgh and it set up an adrenaline charged climax.

Dave Callam scored a breathtaking try to extend Edinburgh's lead over Leinster at Murrayfield. Earlier on in the game, Phil Godman scored a penalty to put Edinburgh into a healthy half-time lead. The home side swept into the lead through a fine flowing move that was finished off by hooker Ross Ford in the corner. Godman then added the extras from the touchline.

Contepomi had put Leinster ahead at Murrayfield with a penalty after seven minutes and has followed that up with another three point kick.

Allister Hogg was yellow-carded just before half-time but came back on to deliver a brilliant captain's performance. Then, in front of a crowd of 3138, Edinburgh dramatically won the game after Contepomi's stoppage time penalty rattled off the post before Cairns stopped the ball in the dead-ball area.

Edinburgh scores: Ford try (15), Callam try (65), Godman conversion (16), penalty (31).
