Cross said: “Watching the effort that has been put into the campaign is truly inspirational. “It could have been quite easy for the people involved to back down without a fight, but they have rallied round and shown what can happen when strong-minded people get involved in a project they feel passionate about. “These kids are battling bravely every day, so it is good to see people fighting on their behalf. What we had to do in order to raise the money was really nothing in comparison. “Sick Kids is the official charity of our rugby club and our visits to the hospital, particularly around Christmas time, always leave you feeling both humbled and enriched by the whole experience. “The discomfort of having to grow a moustache back in November was nothing compared to what some of the children have to go through, so we were delighted to be able to make a contribution.” Scrum half Meyer only moved to the club in the summer from New Zealand, but was immediately made aware of the bond between the charity and the rugby club. Meyer said: “It is a great cause and, although I’m still relatively new to the squad, I knew there was a history there between the club and Sick Kids. “It was great that we were able to split the funds raised with Sick Kids and we would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters, who helped us to do it.” Maureen Harrison, director of the Sick Kids Foundation, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have received over £700 from Edinburgh Rugby. “I know it must have been quite difficult for the boys, but we really appreciate them going to all that trouble. “We would like to thank everyone who supported Edinburgh Rugby in this effort which of course we will now convert into adding extra comfort for Sick Kids. “We really appreciate the effort. But the guys have done a lot more than just the fund-raising; they have also visited the children and invited them to games.” |
