With the odds stacked against them, Andy Robinson's young Edinburgh team played some outstanding rugby and fully deserved their second home win in this season's Heineken Cup Pool Six - nicknamed the 'Group of Death'. After a bright start, Leicester opened up a six-point lead through two Andy Goode penalties, but, while down to 14 men, man of the match Phil Godman, who contributed 12 points, swept through the Tigers line to score and put Edinburgh in the driving seat. A further try from outstanding hooker Ross Ford capped off a remarkable win over England's double winners and showed a miraculous turnaround after the previous meeting at Welford Road in November had ended in a 39-0 defeat. The conversion made the score 7-6. Andy Goode slotted over a penalty right on half time to give the Tigers the half time lead of 9-7, but spurred on by a bouyant home crowd Edinburgh staged a memorable second half revival. Edinburgh were competing hard both in the set piece and at the breakdown and their back line pushed the ball out to the wings at every opportunity. After exchanging penalties, 20 minutes into the second half an outstanding Edinburgh move swept the ball the length of the pitch for Ross Ford to power over in the corner with Godman adding the extras. Edinburgh faced the Tigers onslaught for 10 minutes, but defended strongly and even found time to miss a penalty at the end. The game was played in front of a crowd of 5,850 and saw Edinburgh extend its run of wins to six of its last seven games (adding the scalp of Leicester to Cardiff, Leinster, Ulster and Glasgow among others). Edinburgh Rugby Club squad that defeated Leicester Tigers at Murrayfield (Saturday 12 January, kick-off 3.30pm) Edinburgh’s next home game will be against Munster on Friday 15 February and the team will head to Toulouse next weekend for their final Heineken Cup Pool Six fixture. |
