ImageEdinburgh locks Ben Gissing (pictured) and Matt Mustchin coached over 55 young rugby players at the Falkirk RFC & Grangemouth RFC rugby camp at Glensburgh yesterday.

As part of the camp organised by Falkirk area Clubs Development Officer Graham Lindsay and Scottish Rugby SVQ community coaches Gary Dempsey, Christian Wallace and Emma Stark, participating children aged between six and 14 took part in the four day camp geared towards having fun with rugby.

Obstacle courses, kicking practice and rugby rounders were the order of the day as well as the more traditional contact and non-contact aspects of training to play the game of rugby.

The four day camp – which spent the first two days at Falkirk RFC – came to a climax this afternoon at Grangemouth Rugby Club when Edinburgh Rugby locks Matt Mustchin and Ben Gissing joined the on-field action before answering a barrage of questions from the eager young players. Clubs Development Officer Graham Lindsay, said: “The camp went really well all week but it was a big plus having the pro players there. They were really good with the kids; they both got stuck in – playing along side them, giving them encouragement and giving them pointers.

“It was great to see the kids leaving the camp talking about how they’d tackled and brought down a Scotland player, they were absolutely delighted.”

In addition to the fun had over the course of the four days, Graham was confident that he’ll see a few of the new faces back playing regular rugby: “We had a lot of kids down, 55-60 each day – about a total of 90 different kids over the course of the week – which is great because it’s my job to get these kids down to the clubs and a lot of the parents were asking about how they can get their kids into rugby which is great news.

Edinburgh and Scotland lock, Matt Mustchin, agreed: “This is a fantastic way for kids to give rugby a go. They really got stuck in to me and Ben, it was obvious that they were having a great time and were making lots of new friends.

“Everyone one of them was running around with a big smile on their face talking about how they were going to join one of the local clubs.”

Scottish Rugby’s regional development manager for the central region, John Manson, said: “This is the first of three summer camps in the area. The camps are one of many ways we are using to introduce new players to rugby and in turn increase the membership at the local clubs.

“Last season saw an increase of 29% and 14% respectively in Central & West Lothian youth rugby players.”

Other summer rugby camps happening in the region include Livingston Rugby Club (21 July – Friday 25 July) and Linlithgow rugby club (28 July to 1 August and 4 August to 6 August). Visit the Scottish Rugby website www.scottishrugby.org or phone 0131 346 5000 for more information.
