Congratulations to the Stew Mel Lions P7 side who enjoyed a fantastic weekend on and off the field in northern Italy last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

A group of 23 players plus parents were hosted by San Lorenzo Rugby Club in Clusone, a mountain town not far from Bergamo in Lombardy, and emerged undefeated from a tournament featuring three local teams.

The boys had the honour of being formally welcomed by the mayor of Clusone following a procession through the streets of the town that saw two pipers accompany the youngsters in their tour rugby strips and kilts.

Aside from their successes on the pitch, the Stew Mel pupils spent time on the high climbing ropes at Parco Avventura and savoured the thrill of summer bobsleigh at La Pista di Bob Estivo.

Bruce Walker, one of the parents who helped organise the visit, said: “The hospitality we received was wonderful and we have made lots of new Italian friends.

“The boys were a real credit to both Stew Mel Lions and Scottish rugby on and off the field, and were widely complimented for being so well behaved and playing fantastic passing rugby.”
