Edinburgh captain Roddy Grant will be giving a first-class performance of a different kind next Wednesday after being invited to read at the Edinburgh Sick Kids Carols for Christmas service.
The service has been organised by the Sick Kids Friends Foundation to provide a great start to the festive period and raise funds for the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.
Grant, along with broadcaster and former Scotland No.8 John Beattie and actresses Una McLean, Blythe Duff and Jennifer Black, will speak in between carols sung by the National Youth Choir of Scotland Edinburgh Choir. There will also be readings from patients at the hospital.
Grant has chosen to recite ‘The Night Before Christmas’, the immensely popular festive poem penned by Clement Clarke Moore.
The flanker said: “It’s a great honour to be asked to read at the concert, and I’m really looking forward to it.
“I hope as many people as possible will come along to be part of the evening. It should be a great event, in aid of a really deserving cause.”
The carol service takes place on Wednesday 8 December at the Parish Church of St Cuthbert on Lothian Road from 6.30pm-8pm. Tickets (£18 full price/£15 concessions) are available by calling 0131 668 4949 or by contacting linda.cameron@luht.scot.nhs.uk
Edinburgh’s support of the Sick Kids will continue with a collection of Christmas gifts at the Heineken Cup game against Castres at Murrayfield on Sunday 19 December. The gifts will be taken to the hospital to be distributed among the children. Further information on the collection will be available shortly.
