Edinburgh stars Lee Jones, John Houston and Scott Newlands have been honoured by Scottish Borders Council for their involvement with the Scotland 7s team at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last October.
The trio, who all hail from the Borders, received individually inscribed glass plaques at a ceremony before the Scotland A match against Italy A at Netherdale last Friday.
Both Houston and Jones were playing in the game, and so relied on their parents to pick up the awards. Jak Scott, a silver medalist in the 4 x 200m freestyle swimming relay at the games, was also commended by his local authority.
Scottish Borders Council Convener Alasdair Hutton said: “There can hardly be an honour greater than wearing your country’s colours in sporting competition. Anyone who has done it will swell with a special brand of pride not just in the competition but for the rest of their lives.”
“To get to the level these young men have achieved takes a dedication beyond the ken of most of us and they have thoroughly earned our thanks and our recognition of their achievement in carrying their country’s colours internationally.”
Speaking on behalf of the Edinburgh triumvirate, Houston said: “It’s quite humbling to be recognised in this way, and I’d like to thank the Council for taking the time to make this gesture.
“Although Lee and I weren’t able to make the ceremony because of our commitments with Scotland A team, picking up the plaque later on put the icing on the cake after our win against the Italians.”
