MOFFAT: TARGETING IMPROVEMENTS PDF Print
Friday, 04 December 2009

Rob Moffat admits he was relieved to see Edinburgh secure a priceless 17-16 win at Scarlets but stressed there is still plenty of room for improvement for the Magners League leaders.

Despite trailing 8-3 at half-time, Greig Laidlaw and Craig Hamilton contributed second half tries, Chris Paterson added two conversions and David Blair nailed a drop-goal.

Nevertheless Moffat acknowledges the team needs to up their game for the forthcoming Heineken Cup double-header against Bath followed by the 1872 Cup derbies against old rivals Glasgow.

Moffat said: “We won the game and that is what it is all about. I think we played better in the second half than we did in the first half.

“We kicked better in the second half and took our chances. But we know we will need to play better with a big month coming up.

“We’ve got two games against Bath followed by back-to-back matches against Glasgow and the players will need to improve for those challenges.

“It was obvious we hadn’t played together for a few weeks and we will be targeting improvements.

“We were a bit rusty, but the boys showed a lot of character. In the second half, we played smarter rugby, but we were frustrated because we wanted to play some good rugby.

“The conditions didn’t help and that affected the way Scarlets played as well because they wanted to play some rugby.

“Afterwards, the boys weren’t jumping around celebrating the win, but they were pleased to have got the result. The boys were honest about the performance and know where we need to improve.”

Making his first start of the season, Blair junior enjoyed a productive night’s work and kicked from hand well to keep Scarlets on the back-foot in a topsy turvy match.

Blair said: “It was pretty tough out there – it is a difficult place to come, but it was good to get the victory.”
