Bursting with spirit and gutsy determination, Edinburgh came back to life in the final 10 minutes and kept Munster pegged back – to clinch our first win over the Irish province since October 2006.
Chris Paterson nailed four expertly struck penalties (2, 33, 40, 57) to give Edinburgh a well deserved win over Magners League champions Munster.
But the away side gave Edinburgh a huge scare when they scored a second half try through David Wallace after the back rower was judged to have crossed the whitewash and Ronan O'Gara added the extras.
Looking bright, sharp and alert, Edinburgh imposed their disciplined strategy on the game and the famous Munster line-out malfunctioned as a result.
Tim Visser chased everything and piled the pressure on Munster, but the Irish province looked threatening on the break. Lions stand-off Ronan O’Gara missed a long range penalty and Munster also had saw a try chalked off after TMO Iain Ramage deemed that David Wallace’s attempt had been held up by Roddy Grant. Edinburgh, with Ross Ford at the zenith of his playing powers, kept Munster at bay and survived a barrage of pressure. With Munster threatening to get a stranglehold on the game, Edinburgh dug deep and did enough to clinch a memorable win. As originally anticipated, the battle was won at the breakdown area and at the set piece. In all honesty, Edinburgh’s pack, which had come under intense scrutiny after the defeats at Ospreys and Stade Francais, were magnificent – abrasive, assertive and dominant. All the forward-orientated aspects of the game that Munster are renowned for throughout Europe, Edinburgh were better at on the night. All credit to the coaching staff, for gently reshuffling the pack and coming out with the right result. Attacking with gusto, Edinburgh probably deserved to win by a greater margin, but when defensive chores were needed to be carried out the entire team rolled up their sleeves and took care of business. Edinburgh Penalties: Paterson (4) Edinburgh: Chris Paterson, John Houston, Ben Cairns, Nick De Luca, Tim Visser; Phil Godman, Mike Blair (captain); Kyle Traynor, Ross Ford, Geoff Cross, Steve Turnbull, Scott MacLeod, Alan MacDonald, Roddy Grant, Scott Newlands. |
